The Sixers, Joel Embiid Have Agreed To A Huge Extension

It's official, the Sixers and their coveted big-man, Joel Embiid have agreed to a max contract extension, keeping Embiid in Philadelphia for another five seasons.

Based on the details of what sources are describing as a complex contract structure, the 76ers would have to waive Embiid for him not to reach the full value of his $148 million extension.

The extension confirmed Tuesday starts with the 2018-19 season. With incentives, the deal could be worth as much as $178 million. It was fantastic. It shows you that the city ... they love basketball so much.

"I'm so thrilled to be in this position", Embiid said. "I want to thank ownership, management, the coaches and most of all the fans, for supporting me throughout this whole process". Five years? You are set.

The Sixers are hopeful Embiid will be in the lineup on opening night. Drafted in 2014, Embiid wouldn't play a game in the National Basketball Association until the start of last season. He has yet play a preseason game.

Whenever Embiid does play, Brett Brown expects him to contribute heavily. "He has a chance to be great". There is still lots of work to be done.

This was the logic that Bryan Colangelo's predecessor used when he chose to select Embiid at No. 3 overall in 2014.

Or anxious enough to lose him down the line without striking a deal. I went to the (Eagles) game yesterday.

But his popularity hasn't matched his production. I hope he will stay healthy.

Those 31 games almost earned Embiid the NBA Rookie of the Year Award last season, as he poured in 20.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game in just over 25 minutes.

When he did play last season, the Sixers were a viable playoff contender.

The Philadelphia 76ers are "trusting the process" to the tune of $148 million. Stocked with back-to-back No. 1 picks in Ben Simmons and Markelle Fultz, the Sixers have a core that may be the most promising in the league.

But the flashes of brilliance have convinced Colangelo and ownership that Embiid was worth the risk.

"I think that was the best birthday gift ever", said an overjoyed Embiid.
Boston?that Embiid has transformed the 76ers with "his physical presence; he does it with a defensive mindset, and he does it with an offensive target that is different than anything else that we have".

That's certainly a large amount of money to give to a player who's appeared in just 31 out of a possible 246 games due to a slew of injuries. Off the hardwood, he's charming and gregarious, using social-media savvy to rise to his status as one of the league's most popular players. Obviously, there are going to be people who question it just because he hasn't played that many games.
