Sir Richard Branson promises to build 'revolutionary' Hyperloop train service

The Hyperloop concept was invented by Elon Musk, but Hyperloop One is a separate company and one of many working on the transport technology.

The startup, which intends to create an ultrafast tube transportation system, was named Virgin Hyperloop One after the announcement of the strategic partnership that allows Branson to join the board of directors.

So Hyperloop One may be the furthest along in developing the futuristic transportation network, but it still has a long way to go.

Virgin's plan is to focus on using Hyperloop One to transport passengers and cargo.

Its tracks use magnetic levitation and the pod glides at airline speeds for long distances.

"Earlier this summer I was fortunate to visit the site and see first-hand the exciting technology being tested", Richard Branson wrote in a blog post announcing the investment from Virgin Group.

Trains: Hyperloop floats above the surface of the tube.

Early tests of the technology have achieved speeds around 200 miles per hour, including SpaceX's hyperloop pod competition and Hyperloop One's own test runs on a track in the Nevada desert that have hit a top speed of 192 miles per hour. "I was very impressed and now look forward to helping turn this cutting edge engineering into a global passenger service". As an example of the high-speed transportation offered by Hyperloop, the project expects the travel time from Edinburgh to London to be 50 minutes.

The presser adds that Virgin has been seeking ways to invest in innovative companies, including airlines, trains and even space travel.

'From our airlines to our trains to our spaceline, we have always been passionate about innovation in transport too, especially the development of technology that could transform people's lives.

An important point about Virgin Hyperloop One is that it will be all-electric and will be built as a sustainable form of transport.

Meanwhile, Musk is now working part-time on a similar project, called The Boring Company.
