Roku unveils new streaming sticks and 4K HDR box

One note on HDR: The Roku Streaming Stick+ only supports HDR10, not Dolby Vision, so if you have a 4K TV with HDR, make sure it supports that format.

"At Roku, we love TV and we're focused on making it better for everyone", said Ilya Asnis, senior vice president of Roku OS at Roku.

Roku is also upgrading an array of other streaming devices, priced from $29 to $70, less than week after completing an initial public offering of stock that raised $219 million for the Los Gatos, California, company.

The Roku Express+ is great for classic TVs. It's meant for classic TV owners, however, as it has options to connect composite A/V ports. $39.99 MSRP, exclusively at Walmart.

While the latest Apple TV edition and NVIDIA Shield TV bundle each start at $179, the priciest new Roku streamer only sets you back $99.99.

According to Roku, the new Streaming Stick+ will offer four times the range of the base model. You'll still be limited to 1080p streaming with the regular Streaming Stick, but ponying over a few more dollars will get you the Roku Streaming Stick+.

Roku Streaming Stick+ boasts exceptional wireless performance with its advanced wireless receiver that is innovatively built into the power cord.

The Roku Streaming Stick+ is playing to its strengths - it's small, it's powerful and, thanks to its new external Wi-Fi antenna, has an extended range. In the absence of complete specs it is hard to say if the current requirements of the new device is greater than what is typically supplied by on-set USB ports, but experience with current models from a variety of 4K models suggest that the factory-supplied adapter will be required. It shows which streaming services carry that show and episode, and another click launches it.

But the price cut on the Roku Ultra could make it tougher for Apple to win over video streaming fans with its just released player featuring super-sharp "4K" video - a step up from standard high definition.

In terms of features, there's an ethernet port for wired connectivity as well as a microSD slot for your own media. The new versions now come with remotes with built-in microphones so you can search for content using your voice. It also includes the voice remote, which has a headphone jack for private listening. The Roku Channel, which launched just weeks ago, features hundreds of Hollywood hits and more with no fees, subscriptions or logins required.

The final two devices in the range, the budget-friendly Express and the Walmart-exclusive Express+ have been updated. As of the end of June 2017, Roku OS powered TV streaming for 15+ million monthly active accounts which streamed almost 7 billion hours of video and music in the first half of 2017.
