Despite many advancements in safety technology, Lawton Fire Marshal Mark Mitchell said house fires today actually spread much quicker and are much more unsafe than they were in the past. The fire killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres, according to the National Fire Prevention Association.

Ocean City Fire Department is participating in National Fire Prevention Week.

Participating organizations include other area fire departments, UAMS, Jr. Kids of all ages can visit and learn at 8:30 and 10:30 A.M.at the Central Fire Station.

When it comes to a house fire, a second could be the difference between life and death. In short, home fires present a real risk that residents need to take seriously.

"One of our priorities at ESFI is to educate the public about the technology that can prevent fires before they start".

If the smoke alarms are working in the home the pizza is free.

One of the most basic but vital elements of home fire safety is having a home escape plan that everyone in the household has practiced. Additionally, it's important to practice those plans to make sure they can be accomplished in two minutes or less.
