There is acute anxiety because Australia and New Zealand have been experiencing their worst flu season for many years with struggling to cope.

Herlihy said that makes it all the more important for people to get vaccinated this year.

"Global trends show that the H3N2 virus is likely to be part of Nova Scotia's flu season, a strain of influenza that can be particularly severe in the elderly", said Strang.

Influenza vaccines are now available across Nova Scotia and health officials are encouraging people to get their shots early.

"CDC recommends everyone 6 months of age and older get vaccinated annually".

"Last year in Wales less than half (47 per cent) of those in at-risk groups under the age of 65 took up their free NHS flu vaccination, and we really need to significantly increase the numbers of people being vaccinated in order to prevent the spread of this largely preventable illness".

Trinity County Public Health will begin its annual countywide seasonal influenza campaign today. It takes two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body, so it's better not to wait until the start of the flu season to get the vaccination.

About 1 million Americans are hospitalized from it each year, while almost 50,000 people die from it each year. According to a press release, last year, San Diego's Health and Human Services Agency reported its first flu death on October 4th, and in total, the county saw 86 flu-related deaths.

Those who are 65 or older can speak to their doctors about whether they'd benefit from a high-dose vaccine (Fluzone High-Dose), which is four times stronger than the standard shot, or the adjuvanted vaccine (Fluad), which has an additive created to elicit a more robust immune reaction.

The Berrien County Health Department will offer flu vaccinations at its offices in Benton Township and Niles with walk-in hours 9-11 a.m. and 1-4 p.m. "I like to say flu is fickle". Some people may have mild soreness and redness near the site of the shot and a low fever or slight headache.
