Hamilton, loving life, seeks last hurrah in Malaysia

"In a race this would have been a disaster".

Sepang: Next month's Mexican Grand Prix can give the country a "moment of happiness" as it struggles to recover from its deadliest quake in three decades, Formula One driver Sergio Perez said on Thursday.

"Unfortunately one drain grate has come up". "We guarantee that we will be fighting right to the final corner of the very last grand prix of the year", Ferrari team chief Maurizio Arrivabene said.

The reigning GP2 champion replaces out-of-form Daniil Kvyat at Toro Rosso in Sepang as the 21-year-old Red Bull protege is put through his paces. 'That podium could have been one of the biggest things of my career, ' he rued. There is a fundamental issue in the vehicle that we need to find out.

Vettel's time of one minute 31.261, the fastest ever around the 5.5-kilometer Sepang track, was set in the second 90-minute session in the afternoon, which was brought to an early halt after a loose drain cover caused a heavy crash for Romain Grosjean. Vettel has reason to feel confident of securing a second straight pole position in Saturday's qualifying. "In hindsight, with a million following on Instagram, on a race weekend, (it) is a different story".

Sharing his views was Bottas, who is now in third position with 212 points, but looking motivated to bring home glory as well as to chase Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari who is in second place. The pair both spun earlier in the session, with Bottas running wide at Turn 11 and Hamilton losing the rear of his auto at Turn 7.

"I hope also that our worst circuits are behind us, like the slow speed, high downforce ones".

Hamilton heads into this weekend's Malaysian Grand Prix having taken four pole positions at Sepang, but just one victory at the circuit, scored with Mercedes in 2014.

In the second part of qualifying, everything was completed for Mass and Strella (both Williams), Palmer ("Reno"), Sainz and went Out, who sat behind the wheel of the vehicle Toro Rosso is Russian Kvyat. Although there was a heavy downpour before the first practice, the track had largely dried out by the afternoon.

Mexican driver Perez said the race would help lift the gloom a little. "I want to have a good Sunday, finally".

For much of the current season, Vettel had topped the drivers' standings, but the Mercedes' racer bounced back to clinch the top spot, 28 points ahead of the German driver with six races to go, as media reports suggest.

The Red Bull of birthday boy Verstappen was third, nearly half a second behind Raikkonen.

Vettel and Hamilton were fifth and sixth respectively.

Long runs were limited to a handful of laps before the session was red flagged, but Ferrari appeared to hold a similar - if not larger - advantage.

"Today we arrived and the vehicle was much better but still it looked like Ferrari was a little bit ahead, so some big calls to make ahead of qualifying".
