Duncan stays in front at Safeway Open

"It's just keep playing to keep giving myself chances", Mickelson said about his winless PGA Tour streak of 91 tournaments.

He achieved so much that Thomas was the obvious choice. Steele went on to birdie the 16th and 18th holes, with the latter sewing up his third PGA Tour victory.

"It was really a solid day, very similar to yesterday", Steele said, according to the Register.

The tour does not disclose vote totals.

It's the first time that the Safeway Open has produced a repeat champion. Mickelson hasn't won on the PGA Tour since the 2013 Open Championship.

"It really was a good springboard for me a year ago", he said. "And then I finally got that call, and it just kind of sunk in".

"I'm proud of the way I played today". This is his 27th year on tour and he now has 103 top-3 finishes in his career.

Steele also used the same Wilson FG Tour 100 muscleback blade irons that he employed at the Safeway a year ago.

Duncan, making his second career PGA Tour start, had an erratic round. He swept the Hawaii swing, with a pronounced victory at the Sony Open. "Lots of holes into the wind, lots of uncomfortable shots".

He made his mark at the PGA Championship, winning at Quail Hollow for his first major.

He had a string of four straight birdies from the fourth through seventh holes and finished with seven birdies to go along with three bogeys. He has not played a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since the 2015 Presidents Cup.

The next list of goals will be tougher, and it can wait. Next week: CIMB Classic in Malaysia. At some point, he said, he will talk to Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and perhaps even Spieth on how to raise the bar. "I made 17 greens out there, left myself in some good spots, made a few of them and it was just kind of easy out there". It's something I've dreamed about for a long time. He also listed a half-dozen statistical goals involving putting, scrambling, scoring average and his consistency from tee-to-green. He has never finished in the top 10 in a Grand Slam event.

World number 29 Phil Mickelson may not have been in the best form over the last few years but that has not deterred him from seeing the amusing side of his wayward hitting.
