Blade Runner 2049 ends weekend slightly up on original box office estimates

The film cost $155 million to make, and analysts now suggest that it will struggle to break $100 million by the end of its run in cinemas.

The film will still hope to accumulate a fair taking from across all worldwide markets, so perhaps it's too soon to call this a flop, but it does show there was perhaps a little too much faith shown in the sequel to a film a lot of people might have fibbed about ever having seen.

Also new this week is animated film My Little Pony with an $8 million debut.

The long-anticipated sequel to 1982s "Blade Runner", which is considered a sci-fi classic, also had star power behind it in Ryan Gosling, #Harrison Ford, Jared Leto and Robin Wright.

Blade Runner 2049 is out now.

While the reviews for Blade Runner 2049 have been good, the same can't be said for its box office.

Warner Bros. Domestic Distribution President Jeff Goldstein said "Blade Runner 2049" had fallen short of expectations in mid-sized and smaller markets along with the South and Midwest, where the running time and Major League Baseball play-offs appeared to have held down attendance. "We definitely played to a more narrow audience than we had hoped for".

"We did well in the major and high-profile markets", he added. The adventure/romance movie starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba as two strangers whose survive their charter plane crash landing has an estimated production budget of $35 million. Like CoF, Blade Runner is often remembered for its electronic soundtrack, which perfectly draws the viewer further into the dystopian world created by director Ridley Scott.

Fox 2000 and Chernin Entertainment's romantic-adventure drama "The Mountain Between Us", starring Idris Elba and Kate Winslet, scaled to only United States dollars 10.1 million from 3,068 theaters and placed itself on 2nd position. Based on the Hasbro toys and television series, the movie's voice cast includes Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Uzo Aduba and singer Sia.

Fox's third weekend of "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" come in 5th with $8.7 million while Universal's second weekend of "American Made" came in 6th place, followed by Warner's third weekend of "The Lego Ninjago Movie" with $7 million.

Made on a budget of $150m, typically studios spend roughly $100 million again on marketing, meaning to be profitable Blade Runner 2049 needs around $250m.
