Airtel, Karbonn join hands for low-priced 4G smartphone

The buyer will initially have to pay a sum of Rs 2,899 to purchase the phone.

Bharti Airtel launches its counter to Reliance JioPhone in the form of a smartphone called Karbonn A40 Indian which is effectively priced at Rs 1,399. It supports 4G LTE network, 3G, 2G, GPRS and EDGE that helps in data connection. All smartphones under this initiative will be available at leading mobile retail stores across the country.

Airtel's 4G smartphone is bundled with a monthly pack of Rs 169, which offers data and call benefits.

As a part of this partnership, the Karbonn A40 Indian will be available at an effective price of Rs. 1,399/- as compared to its regular market price of Rs. 3,499/-. Further, unlike Reliance JioPhone, "the ownership of the smartphone is completely with the customer and there is no need to return the device to Airtel/Karbonn at any point to claim the cash benefit". While recharges can be of any amount per month, Airtel has launched a special Rs 169 pack which serves up 500MB of data a day, unlimited calling, and a 28-day validity to make things simpler. You'd then have to make at least Rs 3000 worth of recharges for the first 18 months to receive a Rs 500 cashback, followed up by another Rs 3000 spread over 18 months to get Rs 1000 as cashback.

Monthly recharges at the end of three years plus the initial down payment takes the total to Rs 8983.

Those not opting for the Rs 169 plan need to do recharges worth Rs 3,000 in the first 18 months and another Rs 3,000 over the next 18 months. It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat out-of-the-box and is powered by a 1.3Ghz processor coupled with 1GB of RAM.

The device even comes with a 2Megapixel primary camera and a 0.3Megapixel camera of the front panel.

What do you think about this offering from Airtel and Karbonn?

However, the biggest win that Airtel gets here is when it comes to the OS.

Airtel has partnered with Karbonn Mobiles to unveil Karbonn A40 Indian smartphone in India.

The answer to that question boils down really to what you want from your affordable 4G phone. So, you will get Rs. 1500 after 36 months making the effective price of Rs. 1399 for this phone.

The specifications for the Karbonn A40 Indian are modest. The phone also has a 4-inch display (with 480 x 800 pixels resolution), and there is Dual SIM compatibility.

Another notable aspect of the new Karbonn A40 Indian is that it comes with dual-SIM slots offering consumers the freedom to choose the network of their choice, whereas the JioPhone users have no other option than Reliance Jio. "This is yet another step in our ongoing journey to deeply understand customers and bring innovation that delights them", Raj Pudipeddi, Director - Consumer Business & CMO, Bharti Airtel, said in a statement.
