Cubs C Contreras serves suspension against Cardinals

Contreras initially received a two-game suspension from the Major League Baseball following his ejection from Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Saying sorry, both after he was ejected from Friday's game and to umpire Jordan Baker on Saturday, may have helped Contreras' cause.

With two on and two outs in the top of the fifth inning and a 2-2 count on Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez, Lackey threw a slider that the Cubs thought was a strike.

Both were tossed but the fear was that Contreras would be suspended after slamming his mask and it hit Baker. Contreras was initially slated to sit out for two games, but he appealed the ruling yesterday and will only serve a one-game suspension.

Lackey began screaming at the umpire and was ejected from the game. Lackey then sprinted to home plate and screamed in Baker's face, getting the ejection, followed by Contreras.

"[Contreras] was dying to talk to him", Maddon said.

If Contreras' suspension stands, Chicago will have several options to turn to behind the plate, including Alex Avila, Rene Rivera, Victor Caratini and Kyle Schwarber. "We'll have the one game over with and move it on from there".
