White House renovations unfold while Trump stays at golf resort

President Trump may in New Jersey for a 17-day vacation, but the White House has been humming with activity in his absence as it undergoes a series of renovations.

The project at the West Wing includes work on the Oval Office. Politico said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn't immediately return requests for comment.

Donald Trump has been cleared out of the Oval Office - though not in the way MSNBC anchors might wish.

Despite criticism for taking a vacation, White House staff insist that this renovation was "dire".

Workers were also seen touching up steps on the South Lawn - cranes overhead - as carpets were removed from the West Wing.

"I love the White House, one of the most attractive buildings (homes) I have ever seen". Walls that once held photos were bare as moving pods were stationed on West Executive Drive between the West Wing and Eisenhower Executive Office Building.

According to one account, Trump told staffers and members of his New Jersey golf resort that his new home is "a real dump" - a remark he later denied making. They're expected to improve the air-conditioning system, which the General Services Administration has said is "well past its life cycle and will fail in the near future without intervention", as well as repaint and put in new cables. It is unclear if he will visit the White House on his quick trip.
