On Guam, The Mood Is Calm Despite Being In North Korea's Crosshairs

The small US territory of Guam has become a focal point after North Korea's army threatened to use ballistic missiles to create an "enveloping fire" around the island. The American military presence on Guam consists of two bases - Andersen Air Force Base in the north and Naval Base Guam in the south - which are home to 7,000 US troops.

President Donald Trump is warning of military action, saying the U.S.is "locked and loaded, should North Korea act unwisely".

Guam Governor Eddie Calvo said while he agreed with sending a clear message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, he didn't "want the temperature to get any higher".

Residents of the U.S. island of Guam say they're anxious but overall "unworried" amid missile threats from North Korea.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham said there are two scenarios that could trigger war with North Korea. But they say the behind-the-scenes discussions could still be a foundation for more serious negotiation. The American military presence on Guam consists of two bases - Andersen Air Force Base in the north and Naval Base Guam in the south - which are home to 7,000 USA troops. North Korea this week threatened to create an "enveloping fire" around the strategically important Pacific island, located about 2,100 miles to its southeast.

"Make sure you understand that this is not the final decision", Robert Carlin, the former chief of the Northeast Asia Division at the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, told reporters on a call organized by 38 North, a website that brings together experts on North Korea.

Guam is home to U.S. Naval Base Guam and the Andersen Air Force Base. The air base was built in 1944, when the US was preparing to send bombers to Japan during World War II.

But let's take a step back for a moment: Where is Guam, and why is it in North Korea's crosshairs? Pyongyang has laid out plans to strike near the USA territory of Guam.

This is the first time Park can recall North Korea publicly and explicitly threatening Guam.

Altogether, 7,000 USA military personnel are stationed on Guam. Spain's colonial rule continued until the USA took control in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.

Spain ceded Guam to the U.S.in 1898, but the Japanese seized the island in 1941.

But there's also some resentment about not being able to vote in the general election for USA president. Three weeks later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage was legal throughout the U.S., including all its territories.

Resident Isaac Camacho, 19, says he feels Guam's relationship with the USA mainland is "a little misunderstood on their part".

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) could be a strategic ally of the United States in containing the nuclear bombast from North Korea, with member countries of the regional association not being known to host USA military troops, more so, nuclear weapons.

The official languages of Guam are English and Chamorro, which means 'noble.' It's a Malayo-Polynesian language that has incorporated Spanish words over time.
