NY police officer shot in standoff

A police officer was shot in Brooklyn by a man believed to be emotionally disturbed, an NYPD spokeswoman said.

The woman said her son might flee out the back of the home, so one police officer went to the back of the building, while Nguyen and EMS personnel entered a rear bedroom room.

Nguyen's life was saved by his bulletproof vest when 29-year-old gunman Andy Sookdeo unloaded several rounds into the cop inside a dark hallway of the Cypress Hills home where the man lived with his parents.

"Tonight we saw another example of our NYPD officers going into any situation, never knowing how it might turn on a moment's notice", de Blasio tweeted. Medics took him to the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center and he was said to be in a stable condition, according to the New York Times.

When the emergency services unit made it inside, they found the suspect dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound with two guns laying by his side, along with ammunition. Mayor de Blasio and other officials visited with him at the hospital Thursday. She said in the 911 call her son was unarmed.

Police sources told the newspaper that the gunman appeared to be carrying a rifle, but the weapon has not been officially identified.

The officer was treated by the medics with him, police said.

"He had a great attitude".

Nguyen has been with the department for two years. Police cars lined several streets in the neighborhood as helicopters circled overhead.
