Instant analysis of Eagles trading Jordan Matthews for Ronald Darby

The Bills announced two moves Friday, acquiring the services of Jordan Matthews and E.J. Gaines via trade.

The Philadelphia Eagles have shipped receiver Jordan Matthews and a third-round draft pick in 2018 to Buffalo in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby. Gaines back to Buffalo alongside a 2018 second round pick.

"When you get them and you need a bunch of them, it's something that we felt as well with the quarterback, offensive line, defensive line, you can never have enough of those guys". He intercepted two passes as a rookie with the Bills and started 14 games in 2016, logging 69 tackles and deflecting 12 passes. However, his best single-season effort came in 2015 despite missing three regular-season matchups. In his short career, Matthews has recorded 225 receptions for 2,673 and 19 touchdowns.

For his National Football League tenure as a whole, Watkins has registered 153 receptions for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns across 37 regular-season games. Matthews has been a relatively productive receiver in Philadelphia, but doesn't bring the big play ability that Watkins does. Darby was considered their top cornerback on the depth chart.

Watkins heads to Los Angeles, formerly Buffalo's 2014 first-round pick.

The Bills recently declined their fifth-year contract option on Watkins, so he is set to become a free agent at the end of this season.

Matthews and Wentz spent time a year ago as they rehabbed from their injuries during training camp. A three-time Atlantic Coast Conference champion, Darby was named the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year as a freshman in 2012 and helped the Seminoles win the BCS National Championship in 2013.

As for what the Eagles are getting in Darby, Roseman said: "He has rare speed". In his three years with the Bills, the former Clemson product has hauled in 153 passes for 2,459 yards and 17 touchdowns.

"I'd love to have some continuity there. But we have to do what's best in moving forward".
