Sick Dogs in Florida Signal Spread of Highly Contagious Animal Virus

While only seven of the dogs were confirmed to be suffering from the type of dog influenza, Florida's Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services released a statement saying that several other dollars are six suspected of having the same virus and scientists are awaiting test results.

"They believe that it originated from two possible dog shows: one in Perry, Georgia, and the other in DeLand, Florida", said Jenn Meale with the agriculture department.

Dog flu is highly contagious, but has a low mortality rate.

The disease isn't deadly on its own, but it can lead to pneumonia. which is.

The Herald reported that vets recommend infected dogs be quarantined for at least four weeks and that the live virus can live for 24 hours.

The virus is most commonly transmitted by coughing and sneezing dogs, which can spread their germs up to 20 feet.

Anyone concerned about their dog being infected can have their veterinarian vaccinate them against the dog flu. Outbreaks typically occur in places where pets are in close contact, like kennels and grooming parlors.
