Officer injured in baseball shooting throws first pitch

A Democrat ally of Steve Scalise asked for better protection for himself and his fellow lawmakers a week before the House of Representatives Majority Whip was left fighting for his life after Wednesday's shooting at a Congressional baseball practice.

Ticket sales picked up after Wednesday's shooting, eventually setting an attendance record, the organizers said, as attendees such as Alexander Hilten, 16, of Arlington, Virginia, made a decision to come to the game for the first time.

He also said that Officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, is in "good condition".

"I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Dr. Jack Sava, director of trauma at MedStar Washington Hospital Center said at a news conference Friday afternoon.

"I want to take a moment to send our thoughts, love, and prayers to Congressman Steve Scalise and his entire family".

James Hodgkinson had a handwritten note on him at the time of the shooting that contained about five names and descriptions, a credible federal law enforcement source confirmed to WTOP's JJ Green. "We are encouraged by the improvement of his condition in the last 36 hours", Sava said, adding Scalise will require more operations "to manage abdominal injuries and other bone injuries".

Sava said that, while Scalise remains in critical condition, his risk of death is substantially lower now than when he came in.

Lobbyist Matt Mika was shot multiple times and remains hospitalized.

More than 20,000 tickets had been sold for the game and it was on track to raise more than $1m, roughly double what it did a year ago, for charities, its organisers said.

Trump said the universal support for Scalise and others wounded in the shooting might help heal the country's many political differences.

The charity game, pitting Republican lawmakers against their Democratic colleagues, was set to proceed as scheduled at 7:05 p.m. (2300 GMT) at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, with thousands of spectators expected in the stands.

He sat next to Scalise's bed and spoke with the congressman's family, according to White House press secretary Sean Spicer. Capitol Police said they had "no evidence to suggest that the purchases were not lawful". At a press conference, President Trump says that wounded Scalise's condition is more hard than people first realized.

Hodgkinson, from IL, died in hospital of gunshot wounds sustained in a gun battle with Capitol Hill police.

President Trump delivered a videotaped statement, saying, "we will not be intimidated. the game will go on".

Scalise was rushed to MedStar Washington and immediately underwent emergency surgery.
