No interest in renegotiating Paris climate deal; McKenna

"We recognize, in this regard, the particular importance of the Paris Agreement, adopted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change", it read.

The reason is simple - a whole host of states, cities and municipalities have chose to take up the Paris Agreement challenge without Trump's blessing.

Under Tillerson's leadership, Exxon Mobil Corp. praised the agreement when it went into force in November.

The resolution was passed unanimously, and said that the town of Vail recognizes that scientific evidence for warming of the Earth's climate system from human activities is unequivocal.

The name of the group refers to the goal established by scientists of keeping the rise in global temperature due to carbon emissions under 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in 1750 or before.

The mayors of Los Altos Hills, Cupertino and Palo Alto also have signed the agreement.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt was there on behalf of the United States but left more than a day early after other leaders expressed their disappointment in the USA for withdrawing from the Paris Agreement June 1. He said in his speech he "was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris". "That unchecked climate change could have very serious costs for the USA economy".

The governors of California, New York and Washington formed an alliance to push for continued adherence to the Paris accord just hours after Trump's announcement.

Trump announced this month that the USA would not be bound by Paris targets on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saying they were unfairly damaging to the American economy and overly generous to India and China.

"While 195 other nations are moving forward to create 21st century jobs, reduce carbon emissions and advance innovative energy, the United States will now be less competitive in the global economy", Polis wrote.

"If other countries react by doing less to fight climate change, that has very real costs", Williams said. The former ExxonMobil CEO told senators that he was one of the Trump administration's most outspoken critics of the move to bail on the global climate accord. The mayors of Aspen, Boulder, Breckenridge, Denver, Edgewater, Fort Collins, Lafayette, Lakewood, Longmont and Telluride have joined Vail in upholding the strictures of the agreement in their cities and towns. Again, if he thought the goals the Obama administration had set out were unfair to the United States and its workers, he could simply have restated them at any time.

The decision was as disappointing as it was reckless, but it need not spell the end of desperately needed responsiveness to the increasingly evident challenges of man-made climate change.

A new report finds that India and China are both likely to surpass their Paris Agreement targets, however a new Ecofys report suggests the new policy direction of the U.S. leaves the nation set to miss its own goals. "As a global company, Vail Resorts believes we have a unique responsibility to protect the incredible natural landscapes and environment that surround our mountain resorts and those across our planet".
