Jessica Chastain in talks to play X-Men villain in 'Dark Phoenix'

Fox announced in April that it was releasing a trio of Marvel movies in 2018 - Deadpool 2 on June 1, 2018; X-Men spinoff The New Mutants, which opens April 13, 2018; and Dark Phoenix for November 2, 2018.

Simon Kinberg is officially confirmed to direct X-Men: Dark Phoenix for 20th Century Fox. The Phoenix, in the form of Jean, appeared as the primary antagonist in "X-Men: The Last Stand".

Kinberg was previously rumored to be making his directorial debut onX-Men: Dark Phoenix, though when asked about the matter at the time he would only say such rumors were premature.

Deadline also reports that Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty) is in talks to co-star in X-Men: Dark Phoenix as Empress Lilandra, a member of the alien Shi'ar race who plays a prominent role in the "Dark Phoenix Saga" in the comic books. "It eventually overtook her personality and made her bad, necessitating the X-Men to stop her.' It's not clear whether the film will bother with the "Phoenix Force", as in a version of the storyline in The Last Stand, the nearly uncontrollable 'Phoenix" was part of Jean's mutant powers that she had to keep under control. On the negative side, he wrote X-Men: Apocalypse, and, you know, Fantastic Four. It eventually overtook her personality and made her bad, necessitating the X-Men to stop her.

The entire core X-Men cast of the previous film are expected to return for Dark Phoenix, including Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Sophie Turner, and Nicholas Hoult. Also returning to the movie will be Alexandra Shipp, Tye Sheridan and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Since then, he's been a producer on every X-Men film and wrote the screenplays for X-Men: Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.

Dark Phoenix will shoot in Montreal. All three of these characters appeared in the original X-Men trilogy. Among the returnees are McAvoy (Split, Atomic Blonde) as Professor Xavier, Lawrence (The Hunger Games) as Mystique, and Fassbender (Assassin's Creed) as Erik, aka Magneto, all of whom joined the series in 2011's X-Men: First Class.
