Congress seeks normalcy, heads back to work after shooting

The incident would have been far worse without the professionalism and heroism of the Capitol Police officers, who fired back at the assailant with their pistols and kept him pinned down.

But the White House quickly cleared Trump's schedule of political events and prepared remarks that could have been made by nearly any president. "Their sacrifice makes democracy possible".

Hospital officials said House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., is in critical condition after a shooting during baseball practice and will require more surgeries.

The House on Thursday passed, by voice vote, a resolution expressing "gratitude for the heroic actions" of police officers at the scene of the shooting and "hope for a speedy and full recovery for the injured".

On Capitol Hill, members of congress are stunned. The Great Depression, World War II and some speakers of the House have intervened to cancel some games.

Sanders said he was "sickened by this despicable act" and denounced any use of violence.

Inside the facility, Trump sat next to Scalise's bed and spoke with his family, according to White House press secretary Sean Spicer. The popular and gregarious lawmaker is known for his love of baseball and handed out commemorative bats when he secured the job of House whip several years ago.

Griner, 32, is also a Capitol Police special agent.

The congressional staffer, who works for Rep. Roger Williams of Texas, was shot in the leg and has since been released from the hospital. They were in good spirits despite the heat and humidity as they prepared for the congressional baseball match that pits Republicans against Democrats.

The group were practicing for the annual Democrats versus Republicans congressional baseball game that was scheduled to be played on Thursday. On social media, Hodgkinson had previously posted messages expressing disdain for Republicans. Hodgkinson can't speak to his motive, but others are trying to do so.

"We are grateful for the care he has received, from the first responders in the field to the world-class care here at the hospital", the family said in a statement.

Tennessee's 3rd District Congressman said he heard a loud noise and a crash.

It is not clear how much damage the bullet did, but doctors say such wounds can be serious if they impact vital organs.

Lawmakers took cover in the dugout.

Vice President Mike Pence visited the hospital Thursday morning.

Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., argued that tougher gun laws aren't the answer.

The GOP lawmakers' team was taking batting practice when gunshots rang out and chaos erupted. The man thanked him.

"There will be those who will talk about what's wrong with America, but in this case, Officers (Crystal) Griner and David (Bailey), we saw what's right with America". Among the four others wounded by gunfire, two remained hospitalized, including a lobbyist who was in critical condition.

The event raised questions about the security of members of Congress. The previous shooting severely injured Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in 2011.
