The animated sequel made its debut with sales of $53.5 million in the USA and Canada, researcher ComScore Inc. estimated Sunday in an email.

Mandy Moore's shark thriller 47 Meters Down took fifth place, over-performing in its opening weekend with $11.5 million, while Scarlett Johansson's raunchy comedy Rough Night disappointed with just $8 million. After three weeks since its release, "Wonder Woman" has already pulled in roughly $275 million domestically and $297 million internationally.

In addition to Cars 3, this weekend brought with it the release of All Eyez on Me. However, Cars 2 made around $66.1 million back in 2011, so the numbers have decreased for this installment. It is also the 16th Pixar film to open at No. 1.

The threequel follows the legendary Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) as he's pushed out of the sport he loves by a new generation of blazing-fast racers.

As expected, Cars 3 easily won the weekend with $53.5 million, but Wonder Woman continued to perform well in its third frame in theaters.

The true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur (Demetrius Shipp Jr.), from his early days in NY to his status as one of the world's most recognized and influential voices. While, surprisingly, Rough Night, the unexpectedly hilarious comedy, sits in seventh place with a low $8 million.

Underwater thriller 47 Meters Down started with $4.3 million on Friday, a relatively disappointing number when you look at the similarly themed The Shallows from past year, which started out with $6.8 million.
