Merkel is just being honest with US, spokesman says

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Europe "must take its fate into its own hands" with the USA and Britain not now reliable.

Then at the G7 summit on Friday and Saturday, leaders including Merkel failed to convince Trump to commit to stay in the Paris climate deal.

"I have experienced this in the last few days", she said. "We Europeans truly have to take our fate into our own hands". Her spokesman Steffen Seibert, said Monday the chancellor is "a convinced trans-Atlanticist".

When Trump was inaugurated in January, Merkel had told the billionaire and former reality TV show star that cooperation would be on the basis of shared democratic values. "We Europeans, we must really take destiny into their own hands".

"But we need to know we must fight for our own future, as Europeans, for our destiny", she said.

In response to Merkel's comments, Britain said it would be a "strong partner" to Germany. In fact, her sentiments were echoed and intensified by her main political rival Martin Schulz in a speech late Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he had a "very good interaction" when he met German Chancellor Angela Merkel today at her country retreat near Berlin for informal talks over a private dinner.

Germany and France, the two leading states of the European Union, had been strong supporters of the Paris climate agreement.

Angela Merkel has urged European Union nations to fight for their own future in the face of emerging divisions with the US, Britain's decision to leave the bloc and other challenges.

They also agreed to step up pressure on North Korea, to forge closer cooperation in the fight against terrorism, on the possibility of imposing more sanctions on Russian Federation over role in the conflict in Ukraine.

"The Trump administration wants to terminate climate agreements, wants to enforce military action in crisis regions and won't allow people from certain religious circles to enter the United States", he said.

Obama's participation in a forum with Merkel last Thursday came hours before her meeting with Trump in Brussels at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit. Merkel took the decision to rejuvenate Europe post-Brexit and post-Trump.

Nowotny described European Central Bank cooperation with the U.S. Federal Reserve as "very good, very intensive".

The victory of pro-EU Emmanuel Macron in France last month has given Merkel a strong ally in her bid to make Europe's 27-member strong union work together more closely.

If her party is successful in German elections this fall, Merkel would stand for a fourth term as chancellor.

Days earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed frustration at the way Trump handled a debate on climate change in the G7 summit by refusing to sign up to upholding the 2015 Paris climate accord.
